Orphanage
Orphanage
The Orphanage at St. Elizabeth’s Church. No longer in existence, the building served as a refuge for abandoned, orphaned or illegitimate children for several hundred years. Thanks to King Sigismund Augustus, the children placed in the orphanage had exactly the same rights as ones brought up by their parents. In the 19th century, the building was demolished and the children were transferred to a manor in Oliwa. However, a memento was left behind: a portal, which was set in the courtyard of the prosecutor’s office built to replace the former orphanage.
