In the Middle Ages, cemeteries in Gdańsk were established at churches and chapels. The deceased clergy and distinguished laymen were also buried in crypts and vaults within the churches. By the end of the 14th century, ten cemeteries had been established in the city, including the one at St. Catherine’s Church, whose gate has survived to this day.
